Mobile Data Lite

What is Mobile Data?

Mobile Data Lite is defined as data rates at or below 156 kbps. Actual user experience may be impacted by coverage, cell site capacity and other conditions. Mobile data includes picture messaging, downloading ringtones, downloading content, e-mail, web access and other specialized data applications available from your mobile phone. Mobile data is only available on selected handsets with a Nemont voice plan.

Mobile Data vs. WiFi
Mobile data accessed by a cellular phone or aircard is different than wireless Internet via a wireless router or WiFi hotspot. In the case of WiFi or a wireless router, the Internet arrives to the main location via physical lines (telephone, cable, T1) and is then broadcast wirelessly a short distance. Mobile data travels through the cellular network. A mobile data user is not tied through a physical location and can use the data connection throughout the serving area.

Mobile Web
The mobile web refers to accessing the Internet using mobile devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and other portable devices connected to a public network. This technology utilizes WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) to allow Internet content to be transmitted to cellular phones. This means the phone contains mini-browser software allowing you to navigate various services through the Internet, shown on the phone’s display.

A WAP browser provides all of the basic services of a computer-based web browser but simplified to operate within the restrictions of a cellular phone’s smaller display. Most phones can only display WAP pages specifically designed for phones and cannot display most full web sites in a user-friendly manner. Some newer phones, typically smartphones, can display full web sites, although how well the page fits on the display varies depending on the mini-browser software and the phone’s display.

Mobile E-mail
Mobile E-mail utilizes POP (Post Office Protocol), an Internet protocol, to download messages from an e-mail server to an e-mail client. Some cellular phones have POP capabilities, and therefore an e-mail server could send messages directly to the cellular device, if properly configured. Most cell phones do not have the ability to download an e-mail directly to the phone. Some webmail services, such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo mail, have a mobile website. This allows cellular users to use their phone’s browser to access the site to read and send e-mail messages.

Mobile Data Services

Picture Messaging (MMS)
MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is commonly referred to as picture messaging. MMS extends text messaging to include longer text, graphics, photos, audio clips, video clips, or any combination thereof, within certain size limits. Non-camera cellular phones typically cannot send or receive MMS messages. Customers must have text messaging to have MMS.

E-mail to Mobile
Use your normal e-mail program to compose a message to a Nemont picture messaging subscriber. Send it to: 10-digit number@mms.nemont.mobi. (e.g. 4062639999@mms.nemont.mobi)

Premium Text Messaging (CSC)
A CSC (common short code) is similar to a phone number, but shorter (often five digits), and it can only be used for messaging from cellular phones. A cellular phone user sends a text message using the short code as the destination in order to receive some sort of a response. Short codes are typically used by companies for marketing campaigns and there are often additional costs associated with sending CSC messages. For example, some TV shows allow viewers to vote in polls or enter contests by texting specific messages to a short code. Some short codes are exclusive to a certain carrier or carriers.

Mobile Data Devices

Feature Phones
Feature phones are mobile handsets which provide voice services and limited advanced capabilities. Feature phones may include a camera, WAP browser and BREW access. They usually have proprietary software. Feature phones are not smartphones or PDAs.

Smartphones
Smartphones are a category of cellular phones that provide advanced capabilities beyond a typical cellular phone. Smartphones include an e-mail client and an HTML browser and typically have complete operating system software. Compared to feature phones, smartphones usually have larger displays and more powerful processors.

Aircards
Aircards can be used in conjunction with most laptops to provide Internet access via mobile data. You can browse the Internet with your regular browser, and connect to e-mail servers and other applications. Speeds are determined by network capability.
